FERPA gives certain rights to parents regarding their children's educational records.
Rights transfer to the student:
Upon reaching 18 years of age or
Attending any school beyond the secondary level (High School).
How may a parent access a student's educational records? Students can authorize an individual, including parents, to have access to their student
records by completing the 3rd Party Release via myUNT. This provides immediate access
once submitted. Students can find directions on how to complete the process here.
A parent may access student information but may not act on the student's behalf except
in emergency situations. The law also allows parental access without student consent if a student is claimed
as a dependent for Federal income tax purposes. Documentation would need to be provided
to show the student is a current dependent and a Parental Affidavit completed. For
information on that process, you may contact the Registrar's Office at 940-565-2111.
